12 Nov Luxury Itinerary for Tokyo, Kyoto & Osaka
A Curated Journey Through Japan’s Best Destinations
Japan flawlessly blends tradition and modernity, offering world-class hospitality, Michelinstarred dining, and stunning cultural landmarks. This 10-day itinerary is designed for those who appreciate refined experiences, luxury accommodations, and immersive cultural exploration. From the dazzling cityscape of Tokyo to Kyoto’s timeless charm and the vibrant streets of Osaka, here’s how to experience Japan in ultimate style.
Day 1-2: Arrival in Tokyo & Panoramic Views
Day 3: Cultural Landmarks & High-End Shopping
Morning: Coordinated with the Ritz ahead of time on a 5-hour private chauffeur service, ensuring effortless transportation through multiple neighborhoods. We explored Tokyo’s historic side with a visit to Sensoji Temple and the vibrant stalls of Nakamise Street. We popped into a soba spot for lunch, then continued to Tokyo Skytree for breathtaking skyline views. (Advanced or same-day tickets available on Klook.)
Afternoon & Evening: We took our time exploring the luxurious shopping area of Ginza, including Ginza Six, Tokyo’s premier retail and art complex. Don’t miss Itoya, an iconic stationery store for curated Japanese paper goods.
Ginza is Tokyo’s equivalent to Fifth Avenue, known for its opulent flagship boutiques, fine dining, and architecturally striking storefronts. The area is home to luxury brands like Louis Vuitton, Hermès, and Chanel, as well as high-end department stores like Mitsukoshi and Wako. You’ll also find art galleries, upscale cafes, and hidden cocktail bars tucked into upper floors of sleek buildings.
Day 4: Trendy Tokyo & Michelin-Starred
Morning & Afternoon: Hotel drop-off at Takeshita Street, the heart of Harajuku’s quirky fashion scene. We walked towards Shibuya, stopping at Amore Vintage, Jordan World of Flight, and Kith Tokyo. Witnessed the famous Shibuya Scramble Crossing, one of the busiest intersections in the world.
Optional Lunch: Head to Ivy Place in Daikanyama, a trendy Brooklyn-style neighborhood, for a stylish meal.
Evening: Enjoyed a One Michelin star omakase experience at Nishiazabu Taku. The intimate setting features only a handful of counter seats, allowing the chef to guide guests through a highly personalized and seasonal tasting journey. The vibe is sophisticated yet understated—quiet, serene, and entirely focused on the art of sushi. Each course is presented with quiet precision and reverence. It’s a must for serious sushi lovers! Reservations open 2 months out to secure a seat. A 5-minute drive from the Ritz.
Day 5: Immersive Digital Art & High-Speed Rail to Kyoto
Morning: Visited TeamLab Borderless is an unforgettable experience where digital art installations flow from room to room without borders. You become part of the art as the walls, floors, and ceilings come alive with ever-changing projections that react to your movements. From a sea of lanterns to flower forests and mirrored light tunnels, every space feels dreamlike and immersive. One of our favorite stops in Tokyo!
Afternoon: Took the Shinkansen (bullet train) from Tokyo Station to Kyoto. Prior to boarding, we stocked up on train station bento boxes and beverages for the journey. Yes, train station bento, incredible! Use the Klook app to book tickets. I recommend the Green Car (first class) for more legroom, allocated seats, and a less crowded experience. We arrived in the evening, where a Four Seasons Kyoto chauffeur met us on the platform for a smooth transfer.
Evening: We checked into the contemporary Four Seasons Kyoto. After an exhausting couple of days, it was time to put on bathrobes, order room service, and unwind.
Four Seasons Kyoto Built around an 800-year-old pond garden, the hotel offers a refined blend of traditional Japanese elements and contemporary luxury. The rooms are spacious and serene with tatami touches, private balconies, and spa-like bathrooms. The on-site spa features locally inspired treatments. Dining options include an elegant brasserie and a Michelin-starred sushi bar. The overall ambiance is tranquil, discreet, and completely rejuvenating.
Day 6: Private Kyoto Tour & Dining at Monk
Morning & Afternoon: We absolutely loved our full-day guided tour of Kyoto’s cultural sites:
- Kinkaku-ji (Golden Pavilion): A breathtaking Zen temple covered in gold leaf, surrounded by stunning gardens and a reflecting pond.
- Otagi Nenbutsu-ji Temple: A hidden gem featuring 1,200 whimsical stone-carved Buddha statues, each with a unique expression, nestled in the hills of Arashiyama.
- Arashiyama Bamboo Grove & Togetsukyo Bridge: Walked through towering bamboo stalks and admired the picturesque bridge over the Katsura River.
- Kiyomizu-dera Temple: One of Kyoto’s most famous temples, offering breathtaking panoramic views. Arriving before sunset enhances the experience.
- Higashiyama District: Strolled through the charming streets lined with traditional wooden machiya houses, explored local shops, and visited the iconic Yasaka Pagoda.
Evening: One of the best dining experiences I’ve ever had was at Monk, a celebrated Kyoto restaurant known for its seasonal tasting menus. Helmed by Chef Yoshihiro Imai, Monk embraces Kyoto’s natural landscape and ingredients. All dishes are wood-fired, and with only eight seats at the counter, securing a reservation here is notoriously difficult. Set a calendar reminder two months in advance when bookings open.
Day 7: Shrines, Sake & Steakhouse Elegance in Kyoto
Morning: After filling up on an indulgent Four Seasons breakfast, we explored the iconic Fushimi Inari Shrine, famous for its vermillion torii gates. Arrive early to beat the crowds.
Afternoon: The Fushimi district is also the hub for sake. We took part in the Kyoto Insider Sake Experience (3-6 PM), a distillery tour with curated tastings and traditional snack pairings. We learned so much about sake—it was wild! It was also fun to chat and meet people from around the world, many of whom were also on their first trip to Kyoto.
Evening: A refined dinner at Emba Chophouse at the Four Seasons. While the meal was good, I would try their other on-property restaurant, Sushi Ginza Onodera, next time.
Day 8: Spa Relaxation & Transfer to Osaka
Morning: For a little downtime from our adventures, we indulged in a 120-minute Jet Lag Recovery Package at the Four Seasons Spa. Incredible treatment and service.
Afternoon: The Four Seasons arranged a private Mercedes S-Class transfer to Osaka’s St. Regis Hotel (a 45-minute drive).
Evening: Experienced a two-Michelin-star omakase at Koryu. There are two seating times, offering a front-row seat to the creative preparations and synergy of the Koryu team. Everything, down to the local pottery used for each dish, was top-notch. The enormous sashimi platter was a highlight! Less than a 10-minute drive from St. Regis.
Day 9: Shopping & Street Food in Osaka
Morning & Afternoon: Shopping time! Strolled along Midosuji Street, Osaka’s answer to the Champs-Élysées, lined with designer boutiques from Louis Vuitton to Ferrari. Also visited Umeda Area and Orange Street for sneakers, streetwear, and trendy pop-ups. The diverse style in Osaka made this city so unique!
Evening: Immersed ourselves in Osaka’s vibrant food culture along Dotonbori Street and the hidden alleys of Hozenji Yokocho. We popped into a shabu-shabu restaurant
(Japanese hot pot with thinly sliced meats and veggies cooked in broth). Definitely eat and drink your way around this area—you can’t go wrong.
Day 10: Castle Views & Afternoon Tea Before Departure
Morning & Afternoon: Visited the historic Osaka Castle, then enjoyed Afternoon Tea at 40 Skybar & Lounge at Conrad Osaka, offering sweeping city views.
Osaka Castle is one of Japan’s most significant historical landmarks. It sits on massive stone foundations surrounded by moats and gardens, making for a scenic and tranquil visit. Inside, the museum exhibits samurai armor, historical artifacts, and panoramic views from the observation deck.
40 Skybar & Lounge at the Conrad Osaka is a refined, high-rise affair with stunning views of the city and rivers below. The presentation was artistic, and themed to reflect Japanese cultural motifs.
Departure: Hawaiian Airlines is now a partner of Alaska Airlines, a preferred airline for those in the PNW. We flew Hawaiian out of Osaka with a quick layover in Honolulu.
